MyLink gains app store; only available the US and Canada … for now

At 2014’s CES GM has announced that it will introduce an online app store, dubbed AppShop, that will allow owners of select Chevrolet vehicles in the US and Canada to download new apps and functionality straight into their MyLink entertainment and nav systems.

The app store (sorry, AppShop) will initially be available only on cars fitted with GM’s OnStar 4G LTE system. These include the model year 2015 versions of the Chevrolet Corvette, Equinox, Impala, Malibu, Volt, Silverado and Silverado HD.

Previous versions of the MyLink touchscreen entertainment and nav system have had a number of apps pre-installed, with any future additions and updates reliant on trips to a service centre. The new system allows drivers to download approved apps straight into the vehicles over the air.

At least 10 apps will be available in the AppShop when the first enabled vehicles roll into showrooms. These include streaming radio apps from iHeartRadio, NPR, Slacker Radio and TuneIn Radio. Other apps include those from Priceline.com (a hotel room booking and comparison site), The Weather Channel (spoken word and visual weather updates), Cityseeker and Eventseeker (tourist and event info for select North American cities), Glympse (person-to-person location sharing), and Kaliki (news headlines).
