McLaren MP4-12C films amazing zoetrope ad for Forza Motorsport 5

Remember those cool animation cylinders from back in the day? Well the team behind Forza Motorsport have created a similar thing, except that their canvas was 680 aluminium boards lined up on the side of a race track and their recording medium was a McLaren MP4-12C supercar.

In this beautiful ad for Forza Motorsport 5, a McLaren MP4-12C, driven by Top Gear USA host Tanner Faust, is fitted with a stabilised, gyro-equipped and remote controlled video camera. This camera is viewed and controlled by director Jeff Zwart, sitting in the passenger’s seat, as the McLaren hits speeds around 200km/h.

The camera is directed towards a set of 680 aluminium boards by the side of the track that have in-game images from Forza Motorsport 5 of a McLaren P1 racing around a track. Thanks to the director’s eye, the driver’s skill and the engineering team’s prowess this pretty neat setup is able to reproduce short snippet of in-game footage.
