McLaren 650S: P1-style, 478kW V8 coupe to sit above MP4-12C

McLaren has unveiled a new model, the 650S, that will sit above the MP4-12C in its growing range of supercars.

Based on the preliminary details and looks, the new 650S is basically a MP4-12C with a new front end styled like the limited edition P1 supercar, a more powerful engine, and reworked aerodynamics.

Behind the driver and passenger is a more powerful version of McLaren’s 3.8-litre twin turbo V8. All told the 650S has 478kW of power at its disposal; that’s the equivalent of 650PS, hence the name. According to McLaren the 650S has the same coefficient of drag as the MP4-12C, but the revise active aero package generates more downforce at high speeds — 24 percent more at 241km/h (150mph).

The 650S is fitted with LED headlights, an air braking system that deploys automatically when extra braking force is required, Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres, sat nav, and multiple settings for the drivetrain and suspension systems.

Like the MP4-12C, the 650S will be available as both a coupe (see above gallery) and Spider with retractable hardtop. The McLaren 650S will go on sale across Europe from the third quarter of 2014.
