Chery J1 now listed at A$9,990 drive-away; J3 discounted too

Chery has taken the cleaver to the company’s price list, with the entry-level J1 now starting at A$9,990 including on-road costs.

Marketed under the very uninspiring tagline “Surely it’s Australia’s best value small car!”, the Chery J1 is powered a 1.3-litre 4-cylinder engine with 62kW of power and 122Nm of torque. Drive goes to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission; no automatic option is offered.

Safety equipment includes anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic brake force distribution, front airbags and front disc brakes. Stability control is not available; stability control becomes mandatory by November 2013 and if it’s not offered by then, this could be the J1’s last hurrah on the Australian market.

Other standard kit includes 14-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, air con, electric windows and mirrors all around, and map lights. The audio system features six speakers, AM/FM radio and a MP3 compatible CD player; Bluetooth is an optional accessory.

The larger Corolla-sized J3 hatchback has been reduced to A$12,990 drive-away. It too is a manual only proposition.
