It’s taken a while, but there’s now an S-model at the top of the Audi A1 tree.

The new Typ 8X Audi S1 features a 2-litre turbo engine sending 170kW (231hp) of power and 370Nm (273lb-ft) of torque to all four wheels. There’s no official mention of what type of transmission/s the the S1 will have, but the official photos suggest a 6-speed manual will be offered. To help keep the S1 on the straight and narrow, Audi has junked the regular A1’s compound link suspension and replaced it with a more expensive and precise 4-link setup.

17-inch alloy wheels are standard on the S1, with 18-inch units optional. Other standard features, at least in Europe, include xenon headlights, LED tail-lights, a partially blacked out tailgate, revised front and rear bumpers, a new exhaust system, stainless steel pedals, and sports bucket seats.

Options extend to a more aggressive styling kit with a large rear wing, colour accents for the interior, even grippier front seats, Bose surround system, MMI sat nav, internet connectivity and Wi-Fi hotspot.

The Audi S1 will go on sale across Europe from the second quarter of 2014 in both 3-door and 5-door Sportback forms. It’s expected that the S1 will arrive in Australia at the tail-end of 2014.
