6R Volkswagen Polo facelift: new MIB nav system, safety gear galore

Visually the revised Typ 6R Volkswagen Polo is hardly any different (car spotters will notice the two-slat Golf-style grille), but inside and under the skin there’s plenty of kit that was the domain of luxury cars just half a decade ago.

If you notice the revised reflectors, which are now in the rear bumper, and the “metal” strip connecting the two front headlights, it might be time to get out of the house a little more. The most important change to the updated Polo is availability of LED headlights for the first time.

Inside there are splashes of piano black and silver plastic that bring a bit of life to the professional, but not exactly cheery, German interior. The faux metal highlights surround the new MIB or modular infotainment system, which is available in four configurations: the 2-speaker Composition Touch with a 5-inch monochrome touchscreen, SD card slot and auxiliary jack; 4-speaker Composition Colour with a 5-inch colour touchscreen that gains a CD slot; Composition Media has a 6.5-inch touchscreen, as well as USB port and Bluetooth; and Discover Media which adds sat nav to the mix. The Composition Media and Discover Media systems can be had with MirrorLink, which mirrors supported smartphone apps onto the car’s touchscreen display.

Safety kit that’s new to the Polo range includes adaptive cruise control, post-collision braking, reversing camera, front collision detection, driver fatigue monitoring, and emergency braking in the city. Under the skin there’s also a new electro-mechanical power steering system and, on some models, adaptive dampening.

In Europe the engine range will initially consist of three engines in various states of tune. On the petrol front there’s 44kW and 55kW versions of the 1-litre engine, and 66kW and 81kW variants of the 1.4-litre turbo. For diesel buyers there’s a 1.4-litre turbo motor available with either 55kW, 66kW or 77kW of power.

The revised 6R Polo will go on sale in Europe from the third quarter. It will probably arrive in Australia around the beginning of 2015.
