3rd gen Renault Twingo: rear-engine, RWD, super cute, really tiny

The company is holding off on most of the details until its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March. That said, we do know that the new Twingo shares a mechanical layout and many components with the next generation of Smart cars.

This means that the new Twingo will feature an engine along or behind the rear axle and rear-wheel drive as standard. No word yet on what will power the new Twingo, nor what type of transmission (or transmissions) it will offer. Rumour has it that the Twingo will initially feature a 3-cylinder petrol engine.

Our understanding is that the new Twingo will be offered exclusively in five-door form, albeit one where the rear doors are quite well concealed thanks to hidden door handles. To keep costs and weight down, the Twingo features pop-out rear windows and a one-piece glass or polycarbonate rear hatch. Up front the car features LED driving lights (at least on upspec models), while the models seen above ride on 16-inch alloy wheels.

Stay tuned for more details and pics as we get them.
