2015 Honda Civic Type-R: turbo 2L engine mated to fat body, wings

To mark Honda’s return to Formula One racing, as an engine supplier to the Williams team, the company will begin sales of its Civic Type-R hatch in 2015.

The next Civic Type-R will be the first Type-R branded vehicle to feature a turbocharged engine. In this case it’s a blown version of the 2-litre direct injection Earth Dreams (ick!) petrol engine and should produce, in Honda’s words, in excess of 206kW of power. According to reports, the engine will also boast around 400Nm of torque and a redline set at around 7,000rpm, which is a far cry from the torque-starved, highly strung, 9,000rpm Honda engines of yore.

In the prototype car, power goes to the front wheels via a 6-speed and Honda is benchmarking the new Civic Type-R against the Renault Megane RS265 around the Nurburgring. The company expects the Civic Type-R to launch in Australia towards the end of 2015, although the car should be unveiled in its final form some time in 2014. Naturally specification and pricing have yet to be revealed.
