2014 Hyundai Sonata: conservative i45 successor is coming to Australia

Hyundai will unveil the next generation in Korea at the end of March 2014, with sales to begin in Australia in the second half of 2014.

Accompanying this bit of news, Hyundai has released sketches of both the new car’s exterior and interior. Even in the moody lighting it’s obvious that the new Sonata is a lot more conservative than the outgoing Sonata/i45.

The new Sonata should be lighter than the current model as it will feature more advanced high strength steel — up from 21 percent to 51 percent. There will also be seven airbags and a large touchscreen monitor.

Hyundai Australia has confirmed that the new Sonata will go on sale in Australia in the second half of 2014. It seems likely that the new car will use the Sonata name in Australia instead of the i45 label that was applied to the current model.
